You may find a small difference with various Australian airlines, the standard domestic carry-on luggage size is in Australia is one bag at 115cm linear, which includes the handle and the wheels. This is calculated by adding the dimensions of your carry on together (56cm + 36cm + 23cm = 115cm).
Both Qantas and Virgin Australia also allows you the option of taking two smaller bags on board as long as they measure up to 105cm linear each. (48cm + 34cm + 23cm = 105cm).
This size limit ensures your bag — and ideally everyone else's — will be able to be stored safely in the overhead bin for your flight. By far, the biggest benefits of traveling with carry-on luggage is the speed of travel at the departure and destination airports by being able to transport your belongings yourself without entrusting them to the airline and also hoping they'll arrive at your destination on time and in one, undamaged piece.

At Caribee, we have had many years to consider the benefits of Soft vs Hardside luggage for carry on and we have to say we tend to prefer the former. Go soft!
The main advantage of soft sided luggage is actually its durability. That might seem counter-intuitive: shouldn't something with a hard protective shell last longer? But in our experience, after the same amount of use soft side luggage looks more like it did when you bought it than hard shell luggage. Think about it: If you toss a soft fabric bag back and forth against a wall for a period of time, it might look a little bit busted in the corners, but its stretchy-soft surface would probably absorb a lot of the impact. But if that cube was made out of hard plastic, you'd probably see bump marks or damage basically anywhere it hit the wall.
Additionally we feel soft sided luggage gives the traveller more versatility with how they travel. Caribee soft sided travel bags usually incorporate shoulder straps that can convert your carry on bag to a backpack. This is great for when you find your hands are full, carry on bags like the Caribee Traveller 40, Sky Master 40 Carry On, Titan 50 and our wheel aboard versions Stratos Hybrid 42 and Voyager 35 all have concealable shoulder straps, allowing you to get these bags on your back, when you have a lot of gear.
Soft sided bags are also inherently light in weight making them easier to travel with and a lot easier to lift in to the over head bins. The Caribee Traveller 40 only weighs 1.4kg compared to a hard side carry on that would be double the weight empty.
For Australian airlines, weight restrictions vary from 7kg (Virgin Australia) to 10kg (Qantas) per carry on bag. Airlines in the USA rarely give a weight limit, you just just have to be able to lift it above your head into the storage bin. In most cases, even if airlines do list a specific limit on their websites overseas, they likely won't weigh your carry-on bags. As long as your pack doesn't appear to be overstuffed and you look comfortable carrying it, you will probably be ok.
As with any travel gear, everyone has a different opinion on the carry on luggage brands, but the best buy for you is ultimately the one that suits your needs as a traveller. If you're constantly travelling, invest in a durable bag that can keep up. If you take one or two holidays a year, you can go with something more affordable. Caribee has a great range of wheel aboard and carry on bags that have been design to meet price points and your style of adventure.
What you put in your carry-on bag is regulated, as well as your checked luggage. The same rules that apply to checked bags, which prohibit firearms, lithium batteries, and other potentially hazardous items. You must be mindful of liquids when packing your carry-on luggage.
Liquids, Aerosols and Gels such as toiletries are required to be 100mls or less and must be displayed within a clear resealable plastic bag and screened at the security checkpoint.
Australian domestic carry on size requirements now meet the international carry on size for the same airlines (115cm linear). Previously some airlines in Australia were only allowing bags up to 105cm linear for their domestic luggage, this has now grown to 115cm to make transiting through to international flights a lot easier.
Dash 8 services and regional flights in Australia still maintain this smaller cabin bag size (105cm linear) as the physical size of the cabin luggage bins in these smaller aircraft don’t allow for larger bags. Check with your airline regarding regional plane luggage restrictions.

Avoiding international travel to limit the spread of Covid-19 meant this winter was perfect for exploring domestically. From the east coast of the US I headed off for a few months in the Rocky Mountains and some much needed outdoor time. For the last 3 months I’ve been hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing in Colorado.
With a winter full of outdoor activities choosing the best hiking backpack was paramount. I wasn’t planning any multi-day hikes or camping so my focus was a day hiking backpack. I needed a reasonably sized bag to fit all the gear for a day outdoors including snacks, water, extra layers, and personal items. It also needed it to be light enough to carry all day and rugged & durable to keep up.
I had used my Caribee X-Trek backpack for a few urban trips and short hikes so I knew it was a great size as a daypack and had all the features I would need. A winter in Colorado felt like the perfect place to use it as my go to daypack.
The size of the backpack is exactly what you want for a full day of outdoor exploring or hiking; 19” H x 12” W x 8.5” D. The 28-liter capacity meant room for the essentials; snacks, water, and extra layers plus plenty of space for additional items. Comfortably having the packable space for backup winter clothing was perfect.
The main bucket compartment is spacious and easy to stash your gear in. The backside features a built in hydration bladder sleeve with a pass through slot on the top. For a couple extra-long hikes it worked really well having a large hydration bladder combined with a large water bottle. The few times I’ve used the pack for urban trips the hydration sleeve doubled as a laptop holder. A rolled sweater in the bottom created a nice base for my snacks, extra clothes, and bottle to rest on.
The front organization compartment has pockets to stash your small accessories like keys, wallet, or phone. This is another area that makes the bag great to use for urban travel, but when hiking I primarily stashed energy bars and my wallet/ keys here. You could absolutely fit more in this pocket if needed, there’s plenty of space for a small packing cube or items like extra gloves.
The outside of the bag is durable and refined. One of the best features are multiple anchor points to hook on additional gear - perfect for long hikes. Side compression straps keep the entire bag compact when fully packed and parallel side water bottle holders give you quick access if you aren't using a hydration bladder.
The Caribee X-Trek is surprisingly compact for the volume. It sits close to the body and the padded back panel and straps make it comfortable to wear all day. The sternum strap keeps it secure when you’re on the move.
The material and construction is solid all around. I loved some of the smaller touches like finger loops on zippers so you can open pockets with gloves on. I used this daypack 5 days a week for months and saw little signs of wear and tear.
While equally appropriate for urban day trips this bag really shines as a day hiking backpack. It's comfortable to wear long term, the perfect size to carry everything you need without adding unnecessary weight, and loaded with simple but functional features to stay organized. ]]>I had long admired the Caribee Sky Master 40L Carry on bag but had never had the opportunity for use one for an extended trip away. The most my bag had travelled was an overnight trip to Melbourne and Brisbane, so I was keen to see how it would perform on a longer trip.
The bag is a great size, measuring 54 x 33 x 18cm and providing about 40L of packing space, this should give me plenty of room for enough clothes for four days on the ground in HK. Opening the bag, you are greeted by a handy split level design with zippered mesh dividers on both sides. Immediately I proceeded to pack smaller items like my socks, underwear, cap and toiletries in to the smaller top compartment that secured these items nicely and kept them organised.
The larger lower main compartment of the bag would cater for my clothes as well as a change of shoes (I hear the South Stand at the stadium can get a little messy by days end). Out of habit, I always pack my shoes first (in the lowest part of the bag) as they are heavy and always provide good stability for the bag once packed. Each shoe is used to store power adaptors, changers and a plastic bag for the inevitable dirty laundry that will appear as the journey proceeds. Above this I had ample room for jeans, shorts, shirts and a jumper just in case the weather turns cold. Sure enough the Sky Master 40 held all my gear with some room to spare.(handy for the return trip when I am never as neat)
The best feature of the Caribee Sky Master 40 Carry On has to be the versatility of how you can can carry this bag. If it's your only travel bag, then the side carry handles and padded shoulder strap provide you with great movement and flexibility as you wander through the terminal to the departure gate. However it's the concealable shoulder straps located in the back panel that really provide the knockout blow to other carry on travel bags. If you need to keep your hands free, these shoulder straps provide great comfort whilst converting your carry on bag in to a carry on backpack, it's just genius.
I forgot to mention, the front zippered pocket came in handy for my passport, ticket, phone and book. All were very easy to access before and during my flight.
How was Hong Kong, amazing. The Sevens tournament was more than I could expect, the atmosphere was electric and the vibe from all the attendees and locals was amazing. If you are considering it, definitely give it a go, you will not be disappointed, just don't forget your Caribee Sky Master 40 Carry On bag.

I recently travelled to Cambodia to visit the famed ruins of Angkor Wat. Not being to Cambodia before, it was important to take the right style of luggage that would allow me to adapt to my potential travel situation. The Caribee Sky Master 80L wheel travel pack was high on my list of necessities due to its rugged construction and design versatility by way it can convert from a wheel bag to a functional travel pack.
Flying via Singapore from Sydney, the eleven and a half hour transit time reminds you just how isolated this country still is from the rest of the world, considering how easy it is to get to most of Asia from Australia. I caught up on some sleep and finished books that I was always meaning to complete and the Sky Master’s handy detachable daypack was a perfect bag to use as airline carry on. In fact the multiple storage pockets that this daypack has, makes it one of the best I have used.
Whilst you can take an overnight bus from Phnom Penh to Angkor Wat, I elected to take the short 40 minute flight to the park. Leaving at 7:30am the flight provided great views of the Cambodian countryside. Nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the site as you also reflect on how this amazing temple was built some 900 years ago.
Angkor Wat is an enormous Buddhist temple complex that was originally built in the first half of the 12th century as a Hindu temple. Spread across more than 400 acres, Angkor Wat is said to be the largest religious monument in the world. The word “Angkor” means “capital city” in the Khmer language, while the word “Wat” means “temple.” The structure was built by Emperor Suryavarman II, who ruled the region from 1113 to 1150, as the political centre of his empire.
I spent the day exploring this amazing site, followed by the next six days visiting various parts of Cambodia. My selection of travel bag did not disappoint as on more than one occasion I had the Caribee Sky Master up on my back when the terrain looked to tricky to pass using just the bags wheels. Being prepared for your adventure is my number one tip, and the Caribee Sky Master wheel travel pack is a great travel companion for most adventures.
